Study: A Single Magic Mushroom Trip Causes Long-Term Positive Changes To Personality

Dutchban6-2006-2In a John Hopkins study, a majority of people who took a single dose of psilocybin were more imaginative, sensitive, and tolerant towards others for months afterward. In other words, psilocybin needs to remain illegal because it’s a threat to society. Via MedPage Today:
Many individuals who took a single dose of psilocybin — the active ingredient in what the drug culture calls “magic mushrooms” — showed alterations in personality characteristics, largely for the better, that persisted for more than a year, a prospective scientific study showed.
Participant…tended to show increases in the personality dimension known as openness, according to Katherine A. MacLean, PhD, and colleagues at Johns Hopkins University. Openness is generally considered a positive characteristic and includes such traits as aesthetic appreciation and sensitivity, imagination, intellectual engagement, and awareness of feelings in themselves and others.
The findings were consistent with previous studies and anecdotal reports from psilocybin users, who have said the drug changed their interactions with the world long after the acute effects wore off, MacLean and colleagues said.
Psilocybin is obtained from a variety of mushrooms and acts at the serotonin 5-HT2A receptor. It exploded in popularity for inducing “mind-expanding” hallucinatory experiences in the 1960s. Among the purported benefits are increased creativity, greater appreciation of music and visual art, and more tolerance of other people.
The current research involved 52 adult volunteers, whose self-described motivations were generally “curiosity about the effects of psilocybin and the opportunity for extensive self-reflection.”

The Coming Energy Turnaround In Germany

An anonymous reader writes "Germany has decided to close all of its nuclear power plants by 2022 and embark on an energy turnaround that focuses on large increases in sustainable energy production. What will it take in terms of investments, and will it mean cost hikes for German consumers? Will it really mean more jobs in the 'green energy' sector? Quoting: 'Total investment over the next decade for such an energy turnaround is estimated to be roughly €200 billion (or almost $290 billion). ... At the moment, more than 20 new coal-fired power plants are being planned or already under construction; together, they would achieve a total output of 10 gigawatts and could, in terms of power supply, replace nuclear power plants that are still operational. But coal-fired power plants do not fit into the concept of the sustainable energy turnaround that the government has put forward.'"

Typography Metro System Map Posters

These posters from Trnsprtnation are so cool – they combine my love for maps with my husband’s obsession with public policy and transit planning (seriously, that’s one of his hobbies – and I love him for it).  They also remind me of a certain paper-loving transit planner who guest posted here a few weeks ago.  The subway lines for each city are comprised of text with the names of the stations along each line.  So far the collection includes Boston, Chicago, London, New York, San Francisco, and DC.  Metro maps have never been so beautiful!

Nike MAG Officially Unveiled

Nike Mag
“This project is exciting to me because it brings together three very passionate audiences: the Parkinson’s community, the sneakerheads and Back to the Future fans.” – Michael J. Fox.
A few moments ago, Nike officially unveiled the Nike Air Mag AKA “Marty McFly” shoe. As stated earlier, Nike announced that 1500 pairs of this shoe will be auctioned on eBay, nikemag.eBay.com, with all net proceeds going directly to the Michael J. Fox Foundation. The auction will begin tonight at 8:30PM PST and end on September 18 (150 pairs will be posted on eBay per day for 10 days). The Nike Air Mag has been anticipated for the longest as it first showed its face in the 1989 2015 released film Back to the Future.
Leading up to the release of the Nike Air Mag, a 50 million match grant was given to the Michael J. Fox Foundation by Sergey Brin and Anne Wojcicki; they will match all donations to the foundation, up to 50 million dollars, through the end of 2012.
“We wanted to translate the excitement people have for the ‘greatest shoe never made’ and for the Back to the Future into positive action,” said Mark Parker, CEO of Nike. “But the long term objective is to raise awareness so the Foundation can achieve their goal of eradicating Parkinson’s disease.
The Air Mag is the first rechargeable footwear from Nike were designed as an identical replica to the originals seen in the Back to the Future II movie. Some of the constant elements include the upper contours, the glowing LED panel and the electroluminescent Nike logo in the strap. The Nike Air Mag actually illuminates with the pinch of the “ear” of the high top, glowing for five hours per charge.
What are your preliminary thoughts on the Nike Air Mag?
